Both Xero and Sage are HMRC-recognised for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. Both have bank feeds, expense tracking, and the ability to submit quarterly updates to HMRC. So how do you choose between them?

The honest answer: it depends on your situation. Xero is the better fit for some sole traders; Sage is the better fit for others. This guide cuts through the marketing and gives you a clear, practical comparison.

Pricing disclaimer

Pricing in this article reflects published rates as of April 2026. Both Xero and Sage run promotional offers regularly — always check the current price on their websites before committing.

Pricing breakdown

Xero

Xero has three main tiers for sole traders and small businesses:

  • Ignite — £16/month: invoicing, bank reconciliation, expense claims, MTD submissions, short-term cash flow
  • Grow — £33/month: adds bulk reconciliation, multi-currency (limited), project tracking
  • Comprehensive — £47/month: full feature set including payroll and advanced analytics

Most sole traders would use Ignite. There is no free tier. See our Xero review for a detailed breakdown of what each plan includes.

Sage

Sage has a more accessible entry point for sole traders:

  • Sole Trader (free) — basic invoicing (5 per month), income and expense tracking, MTD quarterly submissions
  • Paid plans — from £7/month: unlimited invoicing, VAT returns, CIS support, full reporting, bank feeds, receipt capture
Sage free tier for MTD

Sage's free Sole Trader plan is one of the only genuinely free options that includes MTD ITSA submissions. If your needs are basic — tracking income and expenses, submitting quarterly updates — it may be all you need. Read our full Sage review for a breakdown of what the free tier does and does not include.

Where Xero wins

Accountant and bookkeeper collaboration

Xero was built with accountants in mind. The adviser dashboard, client collaboration tools, and practice management integrations make it the preferred platform for many UK accountancy practices. If you work with an accountant, there is a good chance they already use Xero and will find it easier to support you on it.

App ecosystem

Xero connects to over 800 third-party apps — from Stripe, Shopify, and PayPal to Dext, Hubdoc, and industry-specific tools. If your business relies on multiple platforms, Xero's integration depth is hard to match.

Reporting and cash flow tools

Xero's built-in reports are more detailed than Sage at equivalent price points. The short-term cash flow forecast, included in the Ignite plan, is particularly useful for sole traders managing uneven income throughout the year.

Growing businesses

If you are planning to hire staff, expand into new markets, or grow beyond sole trader status, Xero scales more smoothly. The platform was designed with growth in mind, and higher-tier plans add features without feeling like an entirely different product.

Where Sage wins

UK phone support

This is a meaningful differentiator. Sage offers UK-based phone support on all paid plans. Xero does not offer phone support at all — you are limited to chat and email. For sole traders who prefer to speak to a real person when something goes wrong, this matters.

CIS for construction sole traders

If you work in construction and are registered for the Construction Industry Scheme, Sage's paid plans include CIS support from £7/month. Xero only includes CIS on higher-tier plans. For tradespeople, contractors, and subcontractors, Sage is the more cost-effective choice.

Price

Sage is cheaper at every tier where a fair comparison exists. The free Sole Trader plan has no direct equivalent in Xero's lineup — making it particularly attractive for sole traders who want to start without committing to a monthly fee.

Sage 50 migration

If your business has been using Sage 50 Desktop — common in established UK trade businesses — migrating to Sage Accounting (cloud) is significantly smoother than switching to a different platform entirely. Familiarity with the interface and terminology reduces the learning curve considerably.

UK-first design

Sage is headquartered in Newcastle and has designed its product around the UK tax system. While Xero (headquartered in New Zealand) has excellent UK support, Sage tends to implement UK-specific features — such as CIS and HMRC system changes — quickly.

If you're leaning toward Xero, try it free for 30 days → — bank feeds connect directly to your account and quarterly MTD updates are submitted in a few clicks.

Decision framework

Choose Xero if:

  • You work with an accountant or bookkeeper who already uses Xero
  • Your business uses multiple third-party tools that need to connect to your accounting software
  • You value detailed reporting and cash flow forecasting
  • You are planning to grow, hire staff, or move to a limited company structure
  • You do not need phone support

Choose Sage if:

  • You want the lowest possible monthly cost — or a free starting point
  • You work in construction and need CIS support without paying premium prices
  • You want UK phone support when things go wrong
  • You are migrating from Sage 50 Desktop
  • Your needs are straightforward: invoicing, income tracking, quarterly MTD submissions

Both are solid choices for MTD compliance

Neither Xero nor Sage will let you down on the core MTD requirement. Both submit quarterly updates to HMRC, both maintain digital records that satisfy HMRC's requirements, and both are well-established platforms in the UK market.

The choice comes down to your workflow, your budget, and your support preferences — not MTD capability.

If you are still unsure, both offer free trials. Xero gives you 30 days; Sage lets you use the Sole Trader tier indefinitely for free.
